No visit to Zeeland is complete without eating a 'Maatjes' herring Dutch style. A good herring has a briny taste and is eaten with one's fingers. How? Grab the herring by the tail, dip it in finely chopped onions and let the herring dangle in the air as you bend your head back. Next, bring the herring to your mouth and take a bite. That is how the Dutch like to eat their herrings.

Melis Seafood in Westkapelle

At the bottom of Westkapelle's seawall, you can get delicious herrings at Melis. Watch out for the seagulls though, they love stealing people's yummy herrings! Melis sells many other types of fish as well. Fresh from the sea!

Zeevishandel Brassem in Domburg

Dangle a juicy herring over your head in the centre of Domburg, less than 100 metres from the beach. Brassem is a household name in Domburg, known for its always freshly prepared fish.

Vistaria ’t Harinkje in Zoutelande

What's in a name? 'The Little Herring' says it all. In the centre of Zoutelande, you can get a proper herring to enjoy with the briny aroma of the sea in your nose, because the sea is nearby. This family business was founded in 1992 so they can tell you everything there is to know about herring and other fish from Zeeland.
